Postpartum Depression or PPD is one of the biggest challenges a mother could go through. It is normally caused by a combination of hormonal changes, overwhelming responsibilities, and environmental factors.

When a mom goes through PPD, many things change especially her emotional and psychological state.

What are the signs that a mom is suffering from Postpartum Depression?

  • Feelings of sadness, emptiness, hopelessness
  • Irritability
  • Overeating or loss of appetite
  • Oversleeping or lack of sleep
  • Overthinking
  • Anxiety
  • Thoughts of hurting yourself, your child, or the people around you
  • Feeling of exhaustion even if you had enough sleep

What can you do to overcome Postpartum Depression?

  • Ask for help in terms of household chores from your husband or your family
  • Schedule your tasks. Save your energy.
  • Share your thoughts to a trusted person. You can also write down your feelings on a sheet of paper. It will help you ease your worries.
  • Do something you love. For example, reading, writing, painting, dancing or anything that could distract yourself from worrying.
  • Listen to music as music helps in alleviating worry and stress
  • Go out and talk to people
  • Take a walk outside and enjoy the sun
  • Exercise. It releases endorphines that will surely make you happy.
  • Breastfeed. Breastfeeding releases oxytocin or love hormones. It will help ease your worries.
  • Trust that you’d be able to overcome it
  • Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, get a massage. Eating banana and avocado could also help.
  • Get enough sleep. It is really challenging to achieve 8 hours of sleep especially when you have a newborn. What you can do is to sleep while baby sleeps throughout the day. You need sleep in order to function well.
  • Pray. This is the most powerful weapon against PPD.

Postpartum Depression is a very challenging phase for every mom but it can surely be overcome. Love, strong support group and prayers are really the best antidote for PPD.

Please note that in the event the depression becomes unmanageable, a professional help would be necessary. Be sure to consult a psychologist or a psychiatrist if things go out of hand.

  1. Napakahirap makadanas ng PPD katulad ng karamihan na walang alam kundi manghusga sabihing pag iinarte salamat at itoy aking nalagpasan
Tanging masasabi ko itoy labanan at humanap ng ibang pagkaka abalahan
